It is incredibly important to manage your Netutation™ (online reputation), by following these simple steps:
-
Google Yourself. Search your name and/or your business name both using your regular browser and by using an “incognito” or “private” browser. We recommend that you search using Chrome, IE and Firefox, just for the sake of completeness. If everything that pops up on the first few pages of search results looks ok, you are in good shape. If not, go to Step 2.
-
Monitor Any Negative Posts On “Gripe Sites” By Googling Your Name and The Name Of The Site. Finally, search your name and the name of any “gripe” site (for example, “Your Name + the dirty” or “Your Business + Scam”) to see if any negative comments, posts or links to the major gripe sites come up.
-
Address Negative or Derogatory Search Results Immediately. It is important to address unfavorable content as soon as possible. News travels fast, and bed news travels even faster. Also, as explained here the longer negative information stays out there, the more likey it is to be scraped by other sites, leveraged by competitors, re-reported by additional media outlets, etc. Once the content is picked up by third parties, it will be much harder to control—and almost impossible to completely remove [link back to “complete removal” blog post].
-
Set A Google Alert for Your Name or Your Business Name. Once you’ve completed Steps 1-3, set a Google Alert for your name. You can set an alert for Google to email you any time you are mentioned on the internet. Obviously, this is not foolproof, but it’s certainly a best practice.
-
Rinse, Repeat. For regular folks, repeating 1-5 a few times a year should be adequate. If you are in the public eye, a celebrity, or do business in a highly scrutinized or competitive industry, you may want to repeat these steps monthly, weekly or even daily if you’ve recently been the victim of a negative attack.
